The government is in talks with the private sector on the issue of providing reservation in jobs, parliament was told Saturday.

"We are in talks with the private sector on the issue and don't want to take any stringent step. We want to do this in an amicable way," Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Kumari Selja said in the Lok Sabha.

"We want that they (private sector) should realise the importance of the issue. If they don't take it seriously, there will be consequences," she said during a discussion on a bill seeking to modify the existing list of scheduled castes in four states, including Odisha and omit one entry from the list of Sikkim.

The house later passed the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Orders (Amendment) Bill, 2012.

The Lok Sabha, which was working on a Saturday, in lieu of a holiday on Aug 16, also passed a bill to amend the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order, 1950.

The amendment seeks to modify the list of scheduled tribes in the states of Kerala and Chattisgarh.
