Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam Tuesday said a petition will be filed in the apex court praying for staying Karnataka's plans to construct dams on the Cauvery river.
In a statement issued here, Panneerselvam said a petition will be filed in the Supreme Court Tuesday asking for a stay order against Karnataka's plans to construct two dams on river Cauvery under the guise of drinking water schemes.
Panneerselvam also said a letter has been sent to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to advise Karnataka to withhold the Expression of Interest (EOI) for its dam projects.
The EOI is to build two reservoirs at Mekedatu in Karnataka for a technical feasibility study.
Panneerselvam also urged Modi to advise Karnataka not to take any steps to execute irrigation, hydro power, lift irrigation schemes or any other scheme in the guise of drinking water supply in the Cauvery Basin of Karnataka without the consent of the government of Tamil Nadu.
Panneerselvam also urged Modi to instruct the union ministry of environment and forests and ministry of water resources not to give clearance to any project by Karnataka without consulting Tamil Nadu.
