A mortar shell slammed into a school in an upscale neighbourhood in Syria's capital Damascus on Wednesday, injuring 23 students and killing one female teacher, media reported.

The mortar shell exploded at a school in the upscale neighborhood of Malki, Xinhua news agency reported citing the official Syrian TV.

The attack comes as part of ongoing mortar shelling from rebel-held areas on the outskirts of the capital against residential neighborhoods in different parts of Damascus.

A day earlier, two mortar shells struck the Russian embassy in northern Damascus.

Meanwhile, the official SANA news agency said the Syrian army backed by the Shia Lebanese Hezbollah group continued to advance against rebel positions in the rugged Qalamoun region north of Damascus and along the border with Lebanon, capturing new hilltops as part of the ongoing military offensive there.
