Telecom operators had a total debt of Rs.242,896 crore in the financial year 2013-14.

Communications and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Wednesday informed the Lok Sabha that state-run BSNL has Rs.4,459 crore debt and MTNL Rs.14,120 crore, while other operators have a debt of Rs.224,317 crore.

"The debt figures include long-term and short-term borrowings. The figures are based on audited/unaudited financial information submitted by the service providers," the minister said in a written reply.

Prasad added that the government has not received any proposal for direct financial support for repayment of debt of BSNL and MTNL.
