Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on Friday said that the government was looking forward to utilise personnel of the Territorial Army in the 'National Mission for Clean Ganga'.

The dedicated and disciplined personnel of the Territorial Army (TA) will leave a lasting impression through their efforts, similar to what was witnessed in the reclamation of environmentally degraded land and restoration of ecological balance, an official statement quoted the minister as saying in his address at the 66th anniversary parade of the Territorial Army here.

The TA is an organisation of volunteers who undergo military training for a few days in a year and can be mobilised in an emergency for the country's defence.

"The territorial army has a distinguished history and has been a bulwark for the nation in extremely challenging conditions during war, counter-insurgency operations as well as natural calamities. Over a period of time, the territorial army has transformed from a 'reserve' to a motivated and trained force," Parrikar said.

Parrikar inspected the parade and took the salute from different TA contingents, which also included three tableaux depicting its pioneering role in the preservation of the eco-system and the nation's rich bio-diversity, efforts in ensuring uninterrupted rail communications and smooth and efficient oil and natural gas refining and supplies.
