The Pakistan military has told the country's leadership that terrorists are on the run and their command and control systems have been "crippled" as a result of the major military offensive in North Waziristan.

The political leadership was apprised about the existing situation during a National Security Conference convened by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif Saturday, Xinhua reported.

The meet was attended by heads and representatives of all major political parties in the National Assembly and the military leadership to review progress in the military operation launched in June.

The army said that hundreds of local and foreign militants have been killed during the long-awaited operation and their sanctuaries destroyed.

Director General Military Operations Major General Amir Riaz briefed the political leadership about the ongoing operation codenamed "Zarb-e-Azb" and the status of objectives achieved so far, a statement from the prime minister's media centre said after the conference.

Army Chief General Raheel Sharif and Director General of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Lt. Gen. Muhammad Zahir ul Islam and the army's spokesperson Major General Asim Saleem Bajwa also attended the conference.
