Construction of a restored rail link between Thailand and Cambodia to improve transport in the Mekong sub-region will be completed by December, the media reported on Monday.

The State Railway of Thailand is rehabilitating another six kilometres of track from Aranyaprathet station in Sa Kaeo province to the Thai-Cambodia border at Ban Khlong Luek, the Bangkok Post reported.

The railway connection between Aranyaprathet and Sisophon -- capital provincial city of Banteay Meanchey -- stopped in the 1970s due to internal conflicts in Cambodia.

Sim Sam Arth, police chief at the immigration checkpoint, confirmed that his office would move to new facilities next week as they already have been built.

Cambodian Tourism Minister Thong Khon visited the construction site in Banteay Meanchey province, where only six more kilometres of track need to be laid. The route on the Cambodian side of the border runs from Sisophon to Poipet.
