Thousands of people converged upon religious places and banks of holy rivers on Friday as they offered the last 'pind daan' to their forefathers on occasion of the Pitra Visarjani Amavasya.
People from Nepal, Odisha, West Bengal, Delhi and Uttarakhand turned up at Naimisharanya -- a holy place in Sitapur -- and offered 'tarpan' to their elders in what is considered an auspicious day to remember one's ancestors, a district official told IANS.
A huge crowd was also spotted at various ghats in Varanasi, Allahabad and Kanpur as well.
With the Pitra Visarjani Amavasya, the curtain come down on the fortnight-long Pitrapaksha, a period considered to be auspicious by the Hindus.
The nine-day festival of Navratri begins from October 1.
