Three Irish Sea cities have been named the friendliest cities in the world.

The traveller handbook, Rough Guides, asked globe trotters to vote for the friendliest cities they have visited, Xinhua reported.

Glasgow topped the list while its Irish neighbour across the Irish Sea, Dublin, came second.

Liverpool in north England was in fourth place.

All three were praised for their cultural offerings, architecture and the friendliness of the local people.

Montreal was in the third place, with Copenhagen fifth.

Making up the top 10 list were Vancouver, Tokyo, Dubai, Melbourne and Manchester, taking 10th place.

It is thought that world-class events like Glasgow's recent hosting of the Commonwealth Games and high profile campaigns like the Scottish independence referendum helped showcase the city on a global stage.

Tourism has become a major growth market for all three Irish Sea cities, so much so Glasgow, Dublin and Liverpool have teamed up with the other two major Irish Sea cities - Cardiff and Belfast to form an Irish Sea alliance.
