Tokyo shares opened mixed on Thursday on weak US stocks overnight as well as better-than-expected US wage data for August.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average fell 2.48 points, or 0.01 per cent, from Wednesday to 16,884.92, Xinhua news agency reported.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 0.42 points, or 0.03 percent, to 1,329. 96.
Gainers were led by banking, and oil and coal product issues, while decliners were led by mining and insurance issues.
