Tokyo stocks dropped 0.36 percent in the morning session of Monday as investor sentiment was dented by the US labour market data out before the weekend.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was down 64.26 points, from Friday at 17,727.90, Xinhua news agency reported.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange lost 9.14 points, or 0.63 percent, at 1,435.39.
Decliners were led by food, real estate and insurance issues.
