Tokyo stocks gained from the off on Tuesday as a solid showing on Wall Street overnight bolstered sentiment to buy as did the yen falling against the US dollar.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 46. 66 points, or 0.28 percent, from Monday to 16,626.69, Xinhua news agency reported.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, rose 4.32 points, or 0.32 percent, to 1,336.75.
Early notable gainers comprised mining, oil and coal products, and machinery-linked stocks.
