Tokyo stocks fell sharply on Thursday following a five-day holiday, with investors being concerned over global economic health after the US stocks declined.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average shed 422.76 points, or 2.34 percent, from last Friday to 17,647.45, a roughly two-week intraday low, Xinhua news agency reported.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 26.67 points, or 1.82 percent, to 1,435.71.

Decliners were led by machinery, nonferrous metals and iron and steel issues.
