Kerala will enforce a 47-day state-wide ban on trawling from Sunday midnight in a bid to protect fish during the spawning season.

Though the central government has announced a uniform 61-day trawling ban across India from June 1, Kerala was allowed to enforced from June 14 midnight.

As a result of the ban, fish considered one of the most important dishes in Kerala, will become dearer by a minimum of 30 percent, experts said.

Fisheries Minister K. Babu told IANS that since 1988, this has been an annual feature. "This is being done as part of conservation as this is the spawning season for many varieties of fish, including shrimps."

Kerala has around 222 marine fishing villages. The total fishermen household is 1,20,486, which includes 6,02,234 people.
