Amid a host of opposition leaders switching allegiance to the Trinamool Congress (TMC), the Left Front on Saturday accused the West Bengal's ruling party of seeking to establish "autocracy" in the state.

"Why are they so afraid of the Opposition? They want to wipe out every sign of opposition in the state. Trinamool is destroying democracy and seeking to establish autocracy," Left Front chairman Biman Bose said.

Pointing fingers at Chief Minister and Trinamool supremo Mamata Banerjee, Bose said despite bagging 211 of the 294 assembly seats, Trinamool's hunger for power was "insatiable".

"Her (Banerjee) party leaders are going around with bags of money shopping representatives of other parties," said Bose.

The veteran Marxist leader's comments come in the wake of the TMC taking over control of several opposition-controlled civic bodies after the Congress and the Left members joined the ruling party.

Earlier in July, Communist Party of India-Marxist legislator Dipali Biswas from Malda's Gazole constituency, and Congress' Tushar Kanti Bhattacharya, representing Bankura's Bishnupur, defected to the Trinamool Congress.
