Former railway minister and Trinamool Congress candidate Dinesh Trivedi retained the Barrackpore Lok Sabha seat in West Bengal, trouncing his nearest rival Subhasini Ali of the CPI-M Friday.

The Trinamool veteran won by a margin of 2,13,785 votes to hand trade unionist and women's rights activist Subhashini Ali her fourth electoral defeat.

Trivedi was unceremoniously dumped by the party as the state's railway minister in 2012, after he earned Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee's wrath for proposing a hike in passenger fares in the railway budget.

The 63-year-old first won the seat in 2009 and has plans to turn the constituency in North 24-Parganas district into an international market for animal and agricultural produce.
