Members of the Trinamool Mahila Congress Friday held a candle light vigil in protest against atrocities on women across the country and the "character-assassination" of party chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mmata Banerjee by "male chauvinists".

Displaying posters saying "Everybody unite against canards and character assassination", the Trinamool women's wing activists took out the rally at Mother Teresa's statue on the bustling Park Street.

Another poster read: "Mothers and sisters are the assets of our homes. Everyone unite against atrocities perpetrated on them".

"Our protest is against atrocities being committed against women across India. It is a social evil. At the same time we protested against the character-assassination of Mamata Banerjee in a planned way. It is nothing but male chauvinism," Trinamool Mahila Congress president Chandrima Bhattacharya, who led the rally, told IANS.

Deputy Speaker Sonali Guha and several other women activists took part in the programme, which came in the wake of the criticism of the government and the chief minister by the opposition and a section of the media and civil society following the twin gangrape and murder incidents at Barasat in North 24 Parganas district and Gede in Nadia district.
