A Turkish military helicopter disappeared from the radar in northwest Turkey Sunday afternoon, media reported.

The Sikorsky helicopter took off from northwestern Izmit military airport and was flying to Konya airbase, Xinhua reported citing the NTV news channel.

Soon after the helicopter took off, it went missing from the military radar, Turkish military sources said, adding that search and rescue have been launched.

The report, however, did not mention how many soldiers were on board the helicopter.

In early September, a Turkish F-16D fighter jet crashed while landing at an air base in Diyarbakir province of southeastern Turkey.
