Turkey says its warplanes shot down an unidentified aircraft which intruded into its airspace near the border with Syria on Friday.

Media reports quoted officials as saying the aircraft was a drone. No further details were available.

According to BBC, the Turkish military said the unknown aircraft detected near the border had been warned three times before it was shot down "in accordance with rules of engagement".

Last week, it was reported Turkish forces shot down a Russian jet after it flew into the country's airspace.

US officials said Russia -- a key ally of Syrian president Bashar Al-Assad -- has directed parts of its air campaign against US funded and other moderate opposition groups in a concerted effort to weaken them.

However, Russia on Thursday claimed its forces launched 32 attacks on "terrorist targets" over the past 24 hours, compared with some 86 the previous day.
