As many as 600 tea workers have lost their jobs as Turturi tea garden in West Bengal's Alipurduar district has been closed, a union leader said on Wednesday.
"Turturi tea garden remained shut as the management was not able to pay both wages and bonus timely," Convenor of Joint Forum of Trade Unions, an umbrella organisation of trade unions working in tea sector, and Citu General Secretary (tea industry) Zia-ul-Alam told IANS.
The management issued a lockout notice after a section of workers had demonstrated a protest on the plantation office's premises for the delay in wage payment.
"Turturi tea garden of Alipurduar has been closed. 600 workers lost job. Diwali gift from both central and state governments," Communist Party of India-Marxist West Bengal State Committee Secretary Surjya Kanta Mishra said in his Twitter handle.
