Two Border Security Force (BSF) troopers were injured when Maoists attacked them on Thursday morning during a search operation in Kanker district of Chhattisgarh, police said.

The BSF men opened retaliatory fire, but the rebels made good their escape owing to the dense forest. The exchange of fire lasted for about half-an-hour.

The incident took place in Pakhanjore area of the district, where blood stains and marks of bodies being dragged were later found. The security personnel believe that some Maoist rebels might have died as a result of BSF's retaliatory firing.

According to police, the search operation was conducted based on information about suspicious Maoist movements in the area.

Sub-Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) Shobhraj Agrawal said two choppers had been sent to evacuate the injured BSF troopers to hospital.

All movement in the area has been halted and search operations have been intensified, Agrawal said.
