At least two people were killed after a small plane crashed in the US state of Louisiana, a media report said.

The plane, a twin-engine Cessna 421, experienced trouble shortly after departing the Hammond Northshore Regional Airport, on Wednesday afternoon, about 75 km east of the state's capital of Baton Rouge, Xinhua reported.

The pilot tried to return, but the aircraft crashed into a field near a runway.

The victims were killed on impact, and their identity was not released, Hammond Fire Chief John Thomas said, adding that 12 firefighters from a station on the airport property responded to the crash and put out the blaze.

Lynn Lunsford, a US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) spokesman, confirmed the accident, saying that FAA investigators, along with those from the National Transportation Safety Board, were en route to the city of Hammond to investigate the cause of the accident.
