The Special Cell of Delhi Police on Monday claimed to have busted an inter-state gang of illegal arms traffickers and arrested two gang members here for selling weapons to criminals in several states in the country.

The accused, identified as Praveen Chaudhary, 25 and his associate, Amar Singh, 35 -- both natives of Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh -- were arrested on Friday after they came to Mathura Road here to give a fresh consignment of 18 weapons to their contact.

According to police, they laid a trap after receiving secret information about the gang members coming to South Delhi to supply illegal firearms. Police teams saw Chaudhary and Singh coming from Faridabad to Mathura Road in a car at around 8.30 p.m. and signalled them to stop, but they sped away.

"Police chased them and later intercepted them with 18 sophisticated weapons and 25 magazines," Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Special Cell Sanjeev Kumar Yadav said.

During interrogation, they told police that they worked for one Dinesh Sardar in Madhya Pradesh and were involved in manufacturing and smuggling of sophisticated firearms to local goons and criminals in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi-NCR and other parts of the country.

"Chaudhary told police that he had earlier been sentenced to jail for several years on murder charges. After being released from jail, he joined Sardar, a Madhya Pradesh firearms supplier and manufacturer, to earn money in good amounts," the DCP said.
