Two persons - a woman and a child - sustained injuries - when a big tree fell on them in the city following rains caused by a deep depression over Bay of Bengal on Saturday.

Police said the woman and the child were passing by Oulin Khatick road in the Tangra area when the tree got uprooted. Locals rushed in and rescued the duo.

Another tree got uprooted in the Salt Lake area, causing a traffic bottleneck.

Several districts - East Midnapore, North 24 Parganas, Howrah, Nadia, South 24 Parganas - of West Bengal received moderate to high rainfall during the day.

Light to moderate rain with lightning is likely in the eastern metropolis while heavy to very heavy rainfall could affect coastal West Bengal in the next 24 hours owing to the deep depression.

The deep depression lay centred at west-central Bay of Bengal, some 440 km from Kolkata. It has initially moved northeastwards. It will cross Bangladesh coast on the evening of November 6, said Kolkata Regional Meteorological centre director G.K. Das.

"Light to moderate rainfall has been forecast in North and South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, Howrah, Hooghly, Kolkata and Nadia districts. The weather will improve from Sunday afternoon," he added.
