Two people were seriously injured when a power transformer exploded at Sanjhi-chhat area on the Katra-Vaishno Devi trek Monday afternoon.

Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) officials said a Power Development Department (PDD) employee was repairing the transformer when it exploded injuring him and a pilgrim from Uttarakhand.

They were taken to the Government Medical College Hospital in Jammu for treatment.

There is a heavy rush of pilgrims to Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine nestled in Trikuta hills, about 50 km north of Jammu.

An average of 25,000 pilgrims from across the country visit the shrine daily, which is a 12-km trek from Katra, the base camp of the pilgrimage.

The number of pilgrims on weekends is higher at about 30,000 per day.
