Two Manipuri students, including a PhD scholar and a Delhi University (DU) student, were found dead at their separate rented accommodations here, police said Thursday.
In the first incident reported from Kotla Mubarakpur area in south Delhi around 9.30 p.m. Wednesday, the body of Kashung Zingran Kengoo, 33, a PhD scholar from Mumbai's Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), was found in a pool of blood with his throat slit.
The body was found on the floor of his rented accommodation by the house owner's brother who alerted the police.
The door of the victim's room was ajar and laptop, mobile, purse and other belongings were not missing, said police.
"It is very difficult to say if the victim was killed or he committed suicide by slitting his throat himself because the knife used in the commission of crime was found in his left hand. The victim was also left handed so we are exploring the suicide angle," a police official said.
"However, it will be too early to say anything as the victim's post-mortem examination report is still awaited," the official said.
Some cooked food was also found in the victim's room suggesting that it might be a murder.
"We are tracking the victim's call details and questioning his friends and neighbours. As no suicide note has been found, it might be a murder," he said.
Kengoo, who hailed from Manipur, had come to Delhi about one-and-a-half-months ago.
In the second incident, a 22-year-old student of Aurobindo College here was found dead at his rented house in Malviya Nagar Thursday afternoon.
Vihrill Shunni, a second year English Honours student was sleeping in his room with his friend and brother who upon waking up discovered that he had died.
No external injury was found on his body. Shunni too hailed from Manipur.
"The door of the room where they were sleeping was locked from inside so outsiders' role is ruled out...," said an investigating official.
"Prima facie it seems to be a case of death due to reaction because Shunni had consumed alcohol last night. But we cannot rule out suicide or murder. The situation will become clear after the report of his post-mortem examination comes," said a police official.
