Two cadres of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland's (NDFB) anti-talk faction were gunned down by Assam Rifles personnel during a joint operation with Assam and Meghalaya Policealong the inter-state border on Saturday, a defence official said.
Defence spokesman, Lt. Col. Suneet Newton said the operation was carried out at Umrangsho, based on specific information that some NDFB faction terrorists were taking shelter in the area.
"A search operation was launched in the evening of Friday based on information about a group of NDFB cadres in the area. However, around 5.40 am on Saturday, when the teams approached the suspected hideout they were fired upon by the insurgents. The retaliatory fire by security forces resulted in elimination of two cadres," he said adding that a foreign made pistol was recovered from the hideout during the search.
The slain cadres were identified as Prasenjit Mushahary and Sobin Boro, who were also involved in kidnapping of Mahendra Rai, Manager of Pyrdung Coal Quarry earlier this month. Rai, who was being held in their hideout, was rescued safely.
