The US Navy Friday said two of its carrier-based fighter jets crashed in the western Pacific Ocean. Though one pilot was rescued, a search was on for the second.

The cause of the accident, which occurred early Friday and involved F/A-18 Hornets from Carrier Air Wing 17 aboard the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70), was still being investigated, Xinhua quoted the Navy as saying in a statement.

One pilot was located and returned to Carl Vinson and is currently receiving medical attention. Efforts are on to locate the second pilot, the statement added.

The two F/A-18C Hornets have not been recovered, it said, adding further information will be released as it becomes available.
