UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Tuesday voiced his deep concern about "the upsurge of violence and killings over the past days in Israel and the West Bank".

He called on all sides to "do everything they possibly can to avoid further exacerbating an already tense environment."

"Violence only deepens distrust, while making more distant the prospects for peace between Israelis and Palestinians," Xinhua quoted Ban as saying in a statement.

An Israeli soldier and a woman were killed Monday in separate stabbing attacks near a crowded Tel Aviv train station in Israel around noon and a busy traffic circle in the occupied West Bank during the afternoon rush.

The killings followed weeks of violence in Jerusalem that spiraled out to Arab towns in northern Israel, where Friday night the Israeli police killed a Palestinian citizen reportedly wielding a knife.
