Paris, Oct 18 (IANS/AKI) The head of the UN cultural organisation Unesco has condemned the killing of prominent investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, who was blown up in her car in Malta.

"I condemn the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia," said Irinia Bokova. "I welcome the pledge by the Prime Minister of Malta to bring to justice this crime against a person and against the rights of freedom of expression and freedom of information, which are essential to democracies everywhere."

Galizia, 53, died when a bomb exploded in her car as she left her home in the remote village of Bidnija in northern Malta.

She published an influential blog top accusing politicians of corruption. She also wrote for The Sunday Times of Malta and The Malta Independent.

After her murder, her son Matthew said Malta was a "mafia state".
