The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Tuesday called for urgent international action to mitigate the immense economic and social impact on countries hosting Syrian refugees.

At the two-day high-level meeting on solidarity and burden-sharing with countries hosting Syrian refugees, officials from major Syrian refugees hosting countries briefed on the impact that the Syrian refugee crisis was having on their countries and the region, Xinhua reported.

According to the UN refugee agency, the over-two-year conflict produced one of the most dramatic and rapid forced displacement situations of recent years, with an estimated 4.25 million people internally displaced in the war-torn country and over 2.1 million either registered as refugees or waiting to register in the surrounding region.

The meeting was attended by government representatives from some 135 states, and top officials from the World Bank, several UN organisations, inter-governmental organisations and non-governmental organisations.
