The Gauhati High Court on Monday gave a clean chit to Union Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain in a rape case, after the victim decided to withdraw complaint.
The complainant had last year lodged an FIR accusing Gohain of sexually molesting her and her sister-in-law on the pretext of getting them jobs.
The clean chit will allow Gohain to bargain for a BJP ticket from Nowgong, the Lok Sabha seat he has retained since 1999.
Gohain had recently said he would not contest polls until the court cleared his name in the case.
Although Gohain lobbied hard for the ticket to his wife Reeta Gohain, the party leadership has almost finalised the name of BJP legislator from Nowgong Sadar constituency Rupak Sarmah for the Nowgong Lok Sabha constituency.
