A lawyers action committee Friday announced an agitation to press their demand for a high court bench in western Uttar Pradesh even as courts in 22 districts of the state remained shut for the 11 consecutive day.
The agitation will be at Jantar Mantar in Delhi Aug 26.
"Bar associations in all 22 districts of western Uttar Pradesh have called for a boycott of courts, leading to a complete halt in court proceedings. We are determined not to restore work in the courts till we are assured that a high court bench will be set up in western Uttar Pradesh," said Rakesh Tyagi Kakra, president of Ghaziabad Bar Association.
Kakra said that the union law minister has sought a proposal from the Uttar Pradesh government for the high court bench.
"Allahabad-based lawyers and other vested interests have been creating snags in establishing the bench," Kakra added.
The lawyers say that even small states have a high court bench, but not western Uttar Pradesh.
