The BJP Monday accused the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government of mishandling the economy, causing all round hardship to the people.

Party general secretary Rajiv Pratap Rudy said the economy was on a downslide though the government was led by an economist.

He said GDP growth was hovering around 4.8 percent, industrial production growth was down to one percent, and growth in mining sector had slid to 3.1 percent.

"India's soverign rating is under threat, private spending has hit an all-time low. Foreign direct investment has gone down by 38 percent."

Rudy said food inflation had been hovering around 20 percent.

He said Manmohan Singh government was talking of "Bharat Nirman" when people were reeling under price rise and its policies were not reducing unemployment.

"Never ever has been economy in such a state," he said and added that the prime minister should explain his position.
