"The UPA (United Progressive Alliance) government by its policies has launched an assault on the aam admi and is serving the interest of the millionaires and corporate sector," Karat said while addressing a rally.

Kicking off the election campaign of the CPI-M-led Left Front here for the Feb 14 assembly election in Tripura, Karat said: "With the establishment of the seventh Left Front government after the ensuing polls, the struggle against the UPA government would be intensified across the nation."

The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) general secretary criticised the UPA government's plan to remove subsidies in various schemes.

Tripura Chief Minister and CPI-M politburo member Manik Sarkar and other Left leaders also addressed the rally.

Sarkar said that the Congress had stolen the slogan of 'paribartan' (change) from West Bengal but that had failed to influence voters in Tripura.

He warned that separatist outfits backed by political parties may unleash violence and intimidate voters against the Left parties ahead of the assembly polls.
