The 1,000 people will represent over 15 percent of the current team strength, Xinhua said.
US Air Force Gen. William Shelton, commander of the Air Force Space Command, said the 1,000 people will be tapped into the cyber business in over two years beginning 2014.
Around 6,000 cyber professionals are currently working for the Command. Around 70-80 percent of the new blood could be civilians, he said.
Shelton said the year 2012 saw "a pretty good move into cyber" to show progression and "grasping the reins of the cyber capabilities of the Air Force".
