A US drone made an emergency landing in Turkey near the border with Syria, officials said on Tuesday.

The drone, belonging to the US-led coalition against the Islamic State (IS), made the emergency landing near Kirikhan town in Hatay province on Monday night due to technical failure, Xinhua news agency quoted military officials as saying.

The coalition forces use Incirlik airbase for airstrikes against the IS militants in Syria, and the US has deployed many aircraft, including drones, on the airbase.

Turkish fighter jets recently shot down a drone within the country's airspace in Kilis province.

The drone was Russian-made, Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said on Monday.

The move came after two incursions into Turkish airspace by two Russian fighters on October 3 and 4 strained Ankara-Moscow ties.

Turkey joined the US-led air raids on the IS in July.
