US passenger train strikes backhoe in US

A passenger train on Sunday morning struck a piece of construction equipment on the rail tracks near Philadelphia, in the eastern US, killing two people and causing the lead engine to derail, local media reported.

Amtrak Train 89 struck a backhoe in Chester of Pennsylvania state, 24 km from Philadelphia, the NBC News reported.

Two Amtrak employees working along the track were killed in the crash, said the report.

Meanwhile, Amtrak confirmed on Sunday that initial reports showed some passengers on board were being treated for injuries.

According to a statement by Amtrak, there were about 341 passengers and seven crew members on board the train which was headed from New York to the southeastern US state of Georgia.

 

Amtrak suspended all services between the New York City and Philadelphia after the crash.
