Authorities in Colombia confirmed Saturday that a US military plane crashed near Acandi city in northeastern Choco province bordering Panama, killing four of the six passengers on board.

The US twin-engined airplane was travelling with a Panamanian and five American passengers when it crashed into the ground, Xinhua reported citing Cesar Hernandez, director of Choco's disaster relief department.

He said that two people have been rescued alive but their identifications are still unknown.

"We are coordinating with Colombia's Air Force to transfer the two people with whom we have contacted to a hospital in the city, although their conditions are still unknown," Hernandez said.

Authorities are undertaking further investigations to establish the cause of the accident. According to initial reports, the accident might have occurred because of difficult weather conditions.
