An agreement has been signed to prolong the operation of the International Space Station (ISS) till 2024, Igor Komarov, the head of Russian space agency Roscosmos, said at a news conference on Saturday.

The ISS life cycle was originally to expire in 2020.

"We have held the first talks with my NASA counterpart here at Baikonur. We made a decision to prolong the operation of the ISS till 2024," Tass quoted Komarov as saying, adding that the ISS project would become more open in the future.

"Under the ISS programme, the door will be open to other participants," he added.
