Cameron Van der Burgh made it a brilliant night for South Africa when he claimed the gold in the men's 50 metre breaststroke final at the World Championships here, beating Australia's Christian Sprenger by just one-hundredths of a second.

Van Der Burgh lived up to his billing of a pre-race favourite with a time of 26.77, while Sprenger clocked 26.78 Wednesday night, reports Xinhua.

It made it a great day for South Africa in the pool in the Palau St Jordi, given that Chad Le Clos had claimed gold in the 200 metres butterfly just minutes earlier and to make things even better Giulio Zorzi took bronze for South Africa.

Van der Burgh won the gold in the same event in 2009 and along with Oleg Lisogur is the only man to win multiple golds in the race, although Wednesday's win means he now has a total of four medals in the event thanks to bronze in 2011 and 2007.
