VHP leader Ashok Singhal, who played a key role in the mass campaign that led to the razing of the Babri mosque in 1992, died here on Tuesday, doctors said.

Singhal, 89, breathed his last at 2.20 p.m. at Medanta-The Medicity hospital, doctor Yatin Mehta told IANS.

"Ashok Singhal is dead," the doctor said. "He passed away at 2.20 despite our best efforts."

Singhal was admitted to the hospital on November 13 with heart and kidney problems. He was also suffering from breathlessness.

He was earlier warded in the hospital for a fortnight from October 20 and was discharged after his health improved.

A strong votary of Hindutva, the Agra-born Singhal joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in 1942 and was deputed to the Vishwa Hindu Parishad in 1980.
