DMDK leader A. Vijaykant was arrested here on Thursday while leading a human chain demanding prohibition on liquor in Tamil Nadu.
The DMDK went ahead with the human chain protest even after the police refused permission.
After Vijaykant and his wife Premalatha were arrested, the party cadres dispersed.
Political parties in Tamil Nadu barring the ruling AIADMK and its allies are demanding liquor prohibition in the state.
The demand has gained momentum following the death of Gandhian Sasiperumal atop a mobile phone tower when he was demanding the closure of a liquor shop near his place of worship in Kanyakumari district.
After declining to accept his body from the police, the family reversed its decision on Thursday.
Sasiperumal's funeral will be held in Salem, 370 km from here, on Friday.
