Star boxer Vijender Singh met Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Friday in order to discuss plans of developing professional boxing in the country.
Thanking Sonowal for supporting his venture into the professional arena, Vijender informed that the misnister has assured that the government will help him to promote professional boxing in India.
"I would like to thank sports minister Mr. Sarbananda Sonowal for giving me time for meeting today. I thanked him for his continuous support in my professional career. He assured me full support in my future fights and i also discussed with him about our plans of developing professional boxing in India. I am happy that Mr. Sonowal gave us very positive response for the development of pro boxing in our country," Vijender said after the meeting.
The former Asian Games champion urged Indian pugilists to turn professional after completing their amateur careers.
"I believe that some boxers who are done with their amateur career should now come forward and join professional boxing, its good for their future career. I am ready to support them. I have expressed my concern to minister on the future of amateur boxing in India and he told me that his ministry is taking all necessary steps to support amateur boxers preparing for RIO Olympics" Vijender added.
Vijender, who quit amateur boxing last month, has enjoyed a sensational start to his professional career. He defeated Sony Whiting of England by Technical Knock Out in his debut fight. He then knocked out another Englishman Dean Gillen in the first round of his second bout.
