National award-winning filmmaker Vetrimaaran's Tamil thriller "Visaranai" left the audience in awe at the 17th Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival.

Inspired by true events, the film, which is about police brutality, had its Asian premiere here on Sunday.

"It's a gutsy film. The images will haunt you for days. It's undoubtedly the best film I've seen at the festival," Anand Kumar, a festival attendee, told IANS.

Another viewer was so moved by the film that he bowed to Vetrimaaran.

Produced by Dhanush, the film now awaits its Indian theatrical release.

Vetrimaaran, however, is sure it will only be released with cuts.

"Even if 70 percent of what we screened today is retained, I'd be really happy. But I highly doubt that," he said.

Earlier this year, the film was screened at the Venice International Film Festival.
