Automaker Volvo Cars reported an increase in sales in September compared to the same month last year.

Sales in Europe and the US went up by 2.4%, Xinhua news agency cited Volvo Cars report released on Thursday.

Volvo's September sales shot up 18.4% in the US but dropped slightly in Western Europe, the carmaker's largest market.

However, sales in Europe so far in 2015 remain 5.4% higher than at the same time last year.

"Our growth in Europe and the US reflects the positive customer reception of the new (SUV model) Volvo XC90," said Alain Visser, Volvo Cars' vice president of marketing, sales and customer service.

Volvo has sold some 346,000 cars so far in 2015, a two% increase on the same period last year.
