Marking World Water Day, Union Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu on Wednesday launched a water management policy pledging to make Indian Railways greener and water efficient.
"I have always believed that celebrating an event for just a day will not do, one has to celebrate it everyday. So, we have decided to celebrate Water Day everyday," Prabhu said addressing the media.
He said that since last year, the ministry has been taking a number of steps to make railways resourceful and efficient and cited the revival of many water bodies during last year's drought which saved money and proved conducive to the environment.
The minister also said that railways aim to harness at least 1,000 MW of energy through clean methods in coming years, of which it has been able to generate 26 MW through wind energy since last year.
"We will also plant five crore trees across the country and also along the tracks for a cleaner environment," Prabhu said.
He also distributed to the associated entities the 'GreenCo' awards, established specifically by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for "catalysing green practices in Indian Industries".
