Cleanliness and tree plantation drives, health camps and cultural events are part of week-long celebrations ahead of India's 68th Independence Day August 15, officials said Thursday.
The celebrations will begin Aug 8 with a city-wide cleanliness drive that will focus on cleaning schools and hospitals as well as repairing pot-holes on roads and street lights.
In addition, 11 lakh trees would be planted all over the city.
On August 14, senior officers of Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung's office, Delhi government and Delhi Police will pledge to donate their organs, officials said adding that health check-up and blood donation camps will also be held around the city.
"Street plays, musical concerts, kite flying competitions and folk shows will be held at Dilli Haats in addition to the illumination of public buildings and monuments including a Raahgiri day (street event which turns specific roads into a traffic free zone) at Chandni Chowk on August 15 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon that will include jogging, yoga, skating etc."
"Those headed to the Red Fort on Independence Day can travel for free on 350 DTC buses plying on the route between 6 a.m. to 10 a.m." said the statement.
Jung urged the people to come out in large numbers and participate in the events.
"Let us all take pride in our nation and celebrate India's 68th Independence Day together," Jung said.
