WhatsApp rape videos: Accused sent to one day police custody

A court here on Wednesday remanded an accused arrested in connection with rape videos that were posted on phone messaging service WhatsApp to a day's police custody.

Metropolitan Magistrate Sujit Saurabh allowed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to quiz accused Kalia Sahoo alias Subrat Sahoo till March 26.

Sahoo was arrested from Bhubaneswar on March 23 and brought to Delhi after a local court there granted three days transit remand to the CBI.

The probe agency told the court that the accused's custody is required to learn about the place of occurrence, modus operandi, recovery of various articles and to apprehend his associates.A

 

Sahoo has been booked under various sections of Indian Penal Code and Information Technology Act for violation of privacy and publishing of obscene material in electronic form.

The CBI added that video clips of rape has been examined and found to comprise nine different clips. It told the court that it has registered eight FIRs and one PE (preliminary enquiry).

The first information reports was registered in the case on the order of the Supreme Court on February 27 directing the CBI to undertake an investigation into the rape videos that were posted on the popular app.

The apex court order has come after the rape video was sent to Chief Justice H.L. Dattu by Hyderabad-based NGO Prajwala in a pen drive along with a letter.
