The BJP Friday attacked the UPA for the gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate dipping to five percent and asked the government to explain why growth was "so low".

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Nirmala Sitharman said the Manmohan Singh-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government was obsessed "with growth and growth-driven economy".

"Even this one obsession failed. Tell us why you are tanking," Sitharaman said.

The Indian economy grew by a sluggish five percent in the financial year ended March 31, 2013 -- the slowest level in 10 years, official data showed Friday.

According to data released by the Central Statistics Office, the country's GDP grew by just five percent from 6.2 percent achieved during 2011-12.
